Frequently Asked Questions

What is surf fishing?

Surf or beach fishing is fishing from within the surf, on the shoreline or off the rocks. Although you may believe you’ll be restricted when beach fishing, surprisingly there is a wide variety of fish you can catch right off the shoreline, including Flounder, Rockfish and Mackerel.

Beach fishing requires extremely specialised equipment and techniques to achieve success. You need rods, reels, line and terminal tackle capable of dealing with the harsh salt spray found on our local beaches, and ensuring your baits and lures are delivered to unsuspecting fish beyond the breaking surf.

The main difference in beach fishing is in the length of your cast. Longer overhead casts are necessary to reach the fish hidden between troughs and around sandbars.

What are the features of a surf fishing rod?

Surf casting rods tend to be longer than other types of fishing rods. They are built to be strong enough to handle large fish in beach fishing conditions and usually have a long grip handle intended for two-handed casting techniques. They generally measure between 2.5 - 4 metres (8-14 feet) in length, perfect for light Bream and Dart fishing to chasing Jewfish and Tailor.

Power is another characteristic surf rods are known for, as they must be able to withstand casting large lures and weights into turbulent beach waters.
